Clarinet Levels of Study
Introduction 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Arrival at level five is indicative of serious dedication to the clarinet. In many high schools there is very little competition on this level. However, all-city and all-state ensembles offer challenging learning experiences. College music students on this level will find new motivation in their capable colleagues and more mature performing groups. Soloing in recitals and with ensembles brings special artistic self identity. College atmospheres also provide a broader range of listening opportunities.

Career plans should be contemplated at this level to give more specific direction to immediate goals. Consideration should be given to work in commercial studios, service bands and educational institutions. Professional engagements should be sought. Depending on individual interests, study of the saxophone might be pursued at this point.

Membership in the International Clarinet Association is highly recommended. This organization's journal The Clarinet provides a wide variety of information which is both interesting and beneficial to the serious clarinetist. Additionally, the On-line Clarinet Resource (http://sneezy.mika.com/ocr/) site on the World Wide Web should be consulted for valuable information.

Technical and performance goals:

  1. Develop a personal performance repertoire in two categories: prepared and rehearsed solos with piano ready to be performed on short notice, and memorized solos to play with band or orchestra.
  2. Establish memorized daily practice routines for the maintenance of basic techniques including tonal inflection, finger control and speed, and tongueing skill.
  3. Organize daily practice to include a well rounded balance of mechanics, etudes and repertoire.
  4. Observe important support activities: selection, adjustment and maintenance of reeds; instrument care; music storage; and selection of a practice area with good acoustics, lighting, air and temperature.

Theory study goals:

  1. Understand and perform: major and minor scales in all keys in the order of the cycle of fifths or fourths and chromatic order; the chromatic scale (over the entire range); whole tone scales; diminished scales; modal scales.
  2. Recognize and perform: major and minor chords, primary and secondary chords, and chord progressions; diminished, augmented, seventh and other added note chords.
  3. Study and recognize musical forms: aria form, sonata form, dance forms, theme and variations, jazz forms, etc. Analyze music as to form and style.
  4. Learn to take musical dictation, first melodic, then harmonic.

LEVEL 5 STUDY MATERIAL

Hite, David: Foundation Studies
Contents: Baermann Method, Part III
These exercises should be practiced for total reflexive familiarity with all diatonic patterns of scales, chords and intervals. Whole tone scales and augmented chords should be added, then diminished scales and studies on octaves, staccato and trills and triplets.

Hite, David: Artistic Studies, Book 1 from the French School
Contents:
C. Rose: 40 Etudes
C. Rose: 32 Etudes
C. Rose: 9 Caprices
The remainder of the Rose etudes should be completed on this level. They should then be reviewed from time to time to develop a routine performance and to become settled with a mature style. The sixteen slow expressive studies of the 32 Etudes (the "bible of clarinet playing") should be thoroughly analyzed, digested and played.

Hite, David: Artistic Studies, Book 2 from the German School
Contents:
Baermann Method, Part IV (select)
Baermann Method, Part V (complete)
The Baermann Part IV is excellent to develop more fluid dexterity. These studies are related to the use of each key on the instrument. They should flow along rapidly, providing a review of basic technic.
