Clarinet Levels of Study
Introduction 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Students on level six are generally in the final years of undergraduate work or are pursuing a Master's degree. At this juncture, commitment to continuous refinement of artistic style and tone should be made. Although basic skills have been well established, small refinements may be suggested by a particular chosen artist teacher. (Practical performance problems in orchestral repertoire are best studied with an orchestral principal clarinetist; the problems of solo careers are best pursued with the advice of a soloist.)

On this level it is important to broaden personal tastes in music - not only music for clarinet, but also music for other woodwinds, brass, strings, keyboard, voice and ensembles. General music education should encompass the study of both classical and jazz history, theory, conducting and education.

In metropolitan areas various professional playing opportunities can be obtained through local music contractors. The musicians' union paper announces auditions for open positions.

Technical and performance goals

  1. Continue to develop, refine and routine musicianship. The inspired, ambitious college student will want to give frequent recitals, not just the required one(s).
  2. Participate in as many different performance groups as possible. Private practice is essential but ensemble skills can only develop by playing with other musicians.
  3. Continue to search for the very best playing equipment (instrument, mouthpiece, reeds and ligatures).
  4. Expand memorized repertoire.

Theory study goals

  1. Develop improvisational skills.
  2. Extend harmonic vocabulary to include secondary chords and their relationship to key. Recognize them in performance music.
  3. Recognize and understand modulation.
  4. Continue to improve dictation and sight singing abilities.

LEVEL 6 STUDY MATERIAL

Hite, David: Foundation Studies
Contents: Baermann Method, Part III
These studies may now be used as a daily warm-up or as a test for new reeds. Use them for maintaining the sharpness of basic technique. They can be employed in making small embouchure changes or developing flexibility or endurance. These Baermann studies are an excellent place to learn to use a diaphragm pulse to enhance sound, mobility over large intervals and legato flow at all dynamics.

Hite, David: Artistic Studies, Book 2 from the German School
Contents:
Baermann Method, Part IV (select)
Baermann Method, Part V (complete)
The Baermann, part V, provides a formidable challenge, appropriate for this level of study. It extends the playing range on above high G to high B. This edition lists special high note and trill fingerings. The advanced fluency that comes from practicing these studies supports security in all repertoire performance.

Hite, David: Artistic Studies, Book 3 from the Italian School
Contents:
Cavallini: 30 Caprices
Labanchi: 4 Studies
Magnani: 7 Etudes-Caprices
Gambaro: 5 Caprices
These operatically inspired studies can be used simultaneously with Book 2, preceding it, or following it, according to choice. While the Baermann promotes advanced fluency, the Cavallini will develop emotional charge in the student's performance. A major objective in approaching these studies should be liberation from carefulness and blandness which may linger in musical style.
